Powerlifting: The Ultimate Strength Sport
Powerlifting is a competitive: squat, bench press, and deadlift. Athletes compete in various weight classes to showcase their raw strength and power. Unlike Olympic weightlifting, which focuses on explosive movements, powerlifting emphasizes lifting heavy weights for maximum force.
The Three Lifts
The squat is a full-body exercise that targets the muscles of the lower body, including the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes. It requires proper technique and stability to lift heavy loads safely. The bench press is a chest-dominant movement that tests upper body strength, particularly the chest, shoulders, and triceps. Lastly, the deadlift is a test of overall strength as it engages multiple muscle groups, including the back, glutes, and legs.
Competitors in powerlifting aim to lift the heaviest weights possible in each of the three lifts. They have three attempts for each lift, and their best lift in each category is combined for a total score. The athlete with the highest total score in their weight class is declared the winner.
