Mike Powell is an American former track and field athlete. He is the current world record holder in the long jump, with a jump of 8.95 meters (29 feet 4.25 inches) set at the 1991 World Championships in Athletics in Tokyo.

Powell was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1963. He began his track and field career at Chester High School in Pennsylvania, where he won the state long jump championship three times. He then attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he won the NCAA long jump championship twice.

Powell’s world record long jump at the 1991 World Championships in Athletics was one of the greatest moments in sports history. He jumped 5 inches (13 centimeters) beyond Bob Beamon’s previous world record, and his jump is still the longest in history.
