The Olympic Games are an international sports competition held every four years. The Games are divided into two main categories: the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics. The Games were revived by Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator who believedthat sports could promote peace and understanding between nations.

The Olympics have grown significantly since their inception. The first Games featured only 14 countries and 241 athletes. The 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, featured 206 countries and over 11,000 athletes.

The Olympics have also faced their share of controversy. The 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany, were held under the Nazi regime. The 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Soviet Union, were boycotted by theUnited States and its allies in protest of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Despite the controversies, the Olympics remain one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world. The Games bring together athletes from all over the globe to compete in a spirit of friendship and fair play.
